Hydroponics: A Remarkable Way Of Gardening

The growing of the plants by inserting the roots in the nutrient-and-minerals-enriched water other than in soil is called the hydroponics.

It is a soil less way of cultivation. Usually based on the substrates or the aggregates and the nutrient based water the plants have been raised. The scarcity of land and that of the cultivable soil are the main reasons behind this kind of cultivation.

In some context, it is called the no-soil plantation. The soil is a reservoir of the essential nutrients required by the plants, but the soil is not compulsory for any plant to grow. Plants though the roots can suck up the minerals and the nutrients dissolved in the water.

This fact stirred Professor Gericke of the University of California, Davis in 1929. He first proved this fact that plant can live without soil and as such, he confirmed that truth by his invention of growing tomato plant in the water. 'Hydro' means the water and 'ponos' means the labor or working in the water. Accordingly, he named his discovery as Hydroponics.

This kind of farming has been extensively used everywhere as hydroponics does not involve much cost as compared to the traditional farming. New techniques have been evolved ushering a new era of cultivation and it seems to be very lucrative for the farmers.

In addition, it seems to be the effective way of farming in the remote areas like space stations, space colonies or Atolls and in the desert.

Some of the major advantages have made hydroponics the number one farming in today's scenario.

- Soil borne diseases and weeds can be warded off properly.
- No kind of soil tiling is required.
- It is really best at places disadvantaged with the actual cultivable land. A small place can give a higher yield.

You can predict a uniform result after the cultivation.
- The hydroponics need small amount of water than the traditional farming.
- Throughout the year, you can grow the plants.
- Under the controlled environmental conditions, quality plants can be produced.

Despite bad weather conditions, the infertility and the scarcity of the soil, the hydroponics will prove to be quite shining in respect of the higher produce than that of the conventional method of farming.

The population is rising every now and then, resulting in the shortage of the cultivable lands. As such, the future of hydroponics, seem to be quite interesting when the cultivation will not involve any ounce of soil, which will be used for another purpose.
